Nursery

Trend-setting nursery

Paauw Lilies' main production facility is located in Rijnsburg, the Netherlands, covering a total surface of 100,000 m2. 85,000 m2 consists of glass-covered greenhouses, the remaining 15,000 m2 is used as handling and storage space. The climate-controlled greenhouses enable yearround production, despite the unpredictable Dutch weather conditions. Paauw Lilies produces 10 million stalks a year, in approximately 10 to 12 different varieties. Over the years Paauw Lilies has put a lot of effort into the development of customized equipment and software. The outcome is impressive; almost the entire production cycle is fully automated. Still, the search for new and exciting innovations continues. Lilies begin their life as bulbs in small containers, filled with soil. Prior to filling the containers, the soil is thoroughly cleansed in a separate bunker. Selection of the bulbs is done with utmost care.

Although the production process is almost completely automated, the delicate planting of the bulbs is still done by hand.Once the bulbs are planted in the containers, they are placed in a cold storage space. The first sprouting of the bulbs takes place here, under strictly controlled circumstances. Upon sprouting the containers are placed in the greenhouses. On average it takes three months to grow a lily. Although lilies are one of Nature's prettiest designs, modern techniques may add to their splendor. That is why a part of the greenhouses has been reserved for the cultivation of new varieties. This is a complicated and time-consuming process that requires a lot of expertise and patience. By working together with other specialists in this area, Paauw Lilies has already achieved remarkable successes recently.
